One of my favorite books to read with the class is The Little Ant by David Drotleff and Daniel Novack. I couldn't find a picture of it, but the link is to Amazon, it's an older book, but it can still be bought. It's a story about an ant who trips on a snowflake and hurts his leg. He goes around blaming everyone for his accident, but in the end his actions were the ones that started the who series of events that led up to his accident. It's a good lesson for kids to understand the impact of their actions.
Another favorite of mine is The Ant and the Grasshopper,(no not all of my books are going to be about ants.) How can you go wrong with Aesop's Fables? I love this book because to it really makes the point that hard work pays off. I always tell my kids the harder they work in first grade, the easier second grade will be.
Next up, The Little Rabbit Who Wanted Red Wings by Carolyn Sherwin Bailey. I love this story about the rabbit who saw everyone else as special and was unhappy with himself. When he finally go the red winds he was wanting, he found out he had more problems. this is a good story for helping kids to be happy with who they are.
Another book with the same idea is James Howe's I Wish I Were a Butterfly. It's a story of a little cricket who is so unhappy with being an ugly old cricket, that he won't come out in the evening and joining the other crickets as they play their music. The frog who lived by the pond told him he was ugly, so now he wants to be a butterfly. It's a story of friendship and realizing beauty in others.
This is a video I found on You Tube on the book "I Wish I Were a Butterfly". It has real pictures of crickets and butterflies. It might be a good follow up to the story.
A special thanks to Barbara @ Ruby Slippers Blog Design for the terrific clip art that I won from her TPT store. She has some really cute clip art for great prices. Check her out!
Thanks for posting the butterfly video!
